Karađorđeva Street is one of the oldest streets in Belgrade. It was created at the same time as the urban settlement on Kalemegdan.
The preserved architectural objects and its importance in history of Belgrade and Serbia make it an important part of the city’s cultural heritage. It was conceived and built as an elite part of the city, where the first theater performance was performed. Luka Ćelović's property spread in the neighboring streets including a large palace that was one of the most beautiful buildings of that era. This street also preserves the memory of Karađorđe and his insurgents, who entered from this direction the city walls and liberated Belgrade from Turkish centuries long occupation. Almost at the same place, a humble teacher Miladin risking his life saved the only bridge on Sava from demolition during the liberation of Belgrade in 1944.
