Former Gallery of contemporary Art, today’s Primary school Hugo Kon, was the birthplace of New Tendencies movement. Four out of 5 exhibitions took place in a baroque palace on Katarinski square, formerly owned by Kulmer family. Due to nationalization after WWII, the palace became Gallery of contemporary art, one of the most avant-garde galleries and exhibition spaces in Yugoslavia, and one of the most important meeting points for the artists from East and West in then divided Europe.  Openess towars abstract and experimental art attracted artists from the East, while the dream of social justice and utopia in a new, socialist country implementing self-management invited many progressive artists from the West. Today the works from New Tendencies can be seen in a new building of Museum of Contemporary Art in New Zagreb.
