The Alley of Sculptures on the banks of the Sava river is Zagreb’s largest open-space gallery. The initiator of the Alley of Sculpture, sculptor Ratko Petrić chose the “Hand” to be made after seeing the wooden model (1956) for the piece by Kožarić. Petrić recognized the sculpture of a hand with extended fingers reaching upwards and hitting a barrier as a mix between minimalism, techno-aesthetic and a taunting commentary of social reality. However, Ivan Kožarić is not a sculptor of pretentious engagement. Quite to the contrary. This hand can remind us of the hand of the “Sitting Man” sculpture (1954) which boldly protrudes far beyond the body into the space and can be seen as a metaphor for human endeavour – a need for overcoming objective limitations – and thus becomes a symbol of its imperfection and weakness.
