Piazza della Libertà is the main city square and is surrounded by important historical buildings:

  • Palazzo del Governo: the result of the joining together of two medieval buildings (Palazzo dei Priori and Palazzo del Podestà) built in the XIII Century.
  • Loggia dei Mercanti: a splendid Renaissance balcony, built between 1503 and 1505 and used in the past as merchants meeting rooms.
  • Palazzo del Comune: built in the XVII Century, it was originally assigned to the University, then in 1665 was assigned to the Municipality
  • Teatro Lauro Rossi: the theater was built between 1765 and 1772. The auditorium, a refined example of the late Baroque, has a bell-shaped plan and is notable for its decorated balconies and raised balustrade
  • Chiesa di San Paolo: the church was built between 1623 and 1655. The façade was never completed, while the interior is finely decorated.
  • Palazzo dell’Università: built as Barbabites College, is Head Office of the University of Macerata since 1816. The Auditorium boasts two large frescos, whereas the ancient library has wooden lacunar ceilings.
