The village of Panagia was built around 1840, due to the migration of the inhabitants of Limenas to the mountain, with the aim of being protected from pirates. Named after the central church of the village, ‘Assumption of Mary’ ("Koimisi tis Theotokou"). It is a settlement characterized as traditional, built in Macedonian style. The village square stands out with the three natural springs, where the gurgling waters and the centuries-old plane trees dominate. It was the old capital of the island, around 1839, with Limenas as its port. Today, the coastal settlement of Chrysi Ammoudia (Golden Beach) is one of the most important tourist resorts of the island.
