One of the oldest settlements of Thassos: with prehistoric and Byzantine traces, such as those of Pyrgos that we meet on the way to the mountain settlement and the chapel of Agios Vasileios. The church of “Ageion Archangelon” dates from 1803 and the monastery of "Koimesis tis Theotokou" from 1813. North of the village there is an artificial lake. The port of Maries is called Skala Maries.

Between Maries & Skala of Maries visitors can find religious sites along the way, as two stanning orthodox churches make their appearance (Saint John church, Monastery of the sleeping of the mother of God). Last but not least, only a few kilometers of Maries village, the waterfalls of Maries are located.
