Limenas or otherwise the city of Thassos is the current capital of the island. It is referred to as "the city seen from everywhere" in the oracle of the Oracle of Delphi, the base of which was built by the Parians in the 7th century. Since 1840, as the capital of the island was moved to the village of Panagia, Limenas became the port of Panagia. In 1876 the capital of the island was moved again to Limenas. Most of the town is a living testament to both ancient and modern history, from the old port, known as Limanaki, the Ancient Agora and the Archeological Museum, to the Acropolis and the Ancient Theater (see suggested cultural route "The Town of Thassos").
